We are please to offer the recently issued Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church. The Church's social teaching, as distinct from its doctrinal teaching, had never to this point been compiled and explained in one official Vatican document. It has been much-needed for a long time. We also have two older excellent titles which summarize the main teachings from the encyclicals. An Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching, by Roger Charles, S.J., is a recent book published by Ignatius Press. How Christ Changed the World: The Social Principles of the Church, by Msgr. Luigi Civardi is a pre-Vatican II study, brilliant in its clarity. Both books treat the Church's teaching on family, work, wealth, property, justice, charity, authority, liberty, law, patriotism and peace. As the Catholic home school child prepares to face the world he will need to know the Catholic social principles so that he may contribute to the building of God's Kingdom on Earth, or as the Compendium says, a Civilization of Love.
