There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Catholic homeschoolers (and others) over the years have used, culled and compiled lists to help you to focus on the precise books you need by subject and grade level. Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum, by Laura Berquist, is the most complete guidebook which we offer. Not only does it outline grade level studies but it also provides lists of good supplementary readings for each grade level through high school. Honey for a Child's Heart: The Imaginative Use of Books in Family Life, 4th Edition, was written by Gladys Hunt, a non catholic homeschooler but it is highly recommended by Laura Berquist and other well known Catholic homeschool advisors. Landscape with Dragons: The Battle for Your Child's Mind, not only presents an extensive reading list, it also analyzes what is dangerous about much of what is  targeted at juvenile audiences today. Books that Build Character: A Guide to Teaching Your Child Moral Values Through Stories is an excellent and e x t e n s i v e annotated list from which to choose good books for your child to read. Let the Authors Speak: A Guide to Worthy Books Based on Historical Setting, is, as the title suggests, a guide to historical fiction by century and location. It is extremely helpful in that it also indicates the reading level appropriate for each story. An extensive bibliography of literature recommended for children of the lower grades can be found in Imagining Faith with Kids: Unearthing Seeds of the Gospel in Children's Stories from Peter Rabbit to Harry Potter.
