Father Francis Finn, S.J., (1859-1928) wrote twenty-seven novels for boys and girls. We have here, for the Catholic home school, six of the most popular. (My father had read them as a boy; I read them as a boy; I hope your children will enjoy them as much as Dad and I did.) Written in the early 20th Century style, the language is sometimes quaint but the stories are funny, instructive and children, especially boys, love them. It is best to start with Tom Playfair or Making a Start because Tom is a major or supporting character in most of the other books. Percy Winn or Making a Boy of Him , Harry Dee or Working It Out , Claude Lightfoot or How the Problem Was Solved , and That Football Game and What Came of It all take place at St. Maure's boarding school. In a different locale, Ethelred Preston is transformed from a crude boastful boy into a young Catholic gentleman. These books are lots of fun with lots of good lessons and Catholic teaching in their pages.
