There was a time in our nation's history when home schooling was the norm and the Bible was the chief, or perhaps only, book from which children learned to read, learned of history, learned the principles of social order, the virtues, the attributes of God and the teachings of Our Lord. Today we have many other sources of information but still there is none better than the Bible.
We believe that the two best translations of the Bible for elegance of phrase and for accuracy are the (classical) Douay-Rheims and the (modern) Revised Standard Version or RSV [not the NRSV]. These are available in a variety of bindings and prices. These are complete, unabridged Bibles. Simplified Bibles for children are listed under the category Children's Bibles.
We also offer two well known and orthodox Study Bibles based on the RSV: The Ignatius Study Bible, a series of paperback booklets each of which contains the complete text of one of the books of the New Testament (or more than one of the shorter epistles) along with commentaries and insights from Church Fathers and contemporary scholars Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch. The Navarre Bible is a multi-volume work from the theology faculty of the University of Navarre in Spain. It contains the English RSV translation as well as the Latin Vulgate translation and extensive commentaries. The commentaries and notes help to explain the doctrinal and practical meaning of the scriptural text. They include exegesis from the Fathers and Doctors, noted spiritual writers, and Church documents .
There is an assortment of other books to help us in the study of the Bible. Where We Got the Bible is a helpful apologetics work which explains how the canon of the Bible was decided upon and how the "reformers" tried to discard the books which did not suit their purposes.
