In the elementary grades the Catholic home school attempts to present to the child, in a formal way, the language he already knows in an informal way so that he can develop the habit of speaking and writing English correctly. Grammar, usage, sentence structure, composition, vocabulary, and spelling are all emphasized. To this end, because so many modern textbooks have abandoned tried and true methods, we rely on texts that first appeared in the early 1900's. Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lessons are designed to be used from second through sixth grades. Their approach is not as intense as is that of the Catholic National Readers. The readers cover the same grade levels in seven books instead of two. The reading selections are longer and more diverse. They include phonics in the earliest lessons and longer reading selections later on.
